It is tempting to believe that a high IQ is a one-way ticket to professional success. Cultural stories reinforce the myth: brilliant student becomes famous scientist, math prodigy becomes tech billionaire, quick-witted debater becomes brilliant lawyer. The simplified logic says that because intelligence helps you solve problems, smarter people must do better at problem-solving jobs.
The actual research is messier — and more interesting. IQ does predict job performance, but the relationship is not dramatic, and it gets weaker as careers progress. IQ is one factor among many, and rarely the most important one in the long run. Understanding what the data actually says is genuinely useful, especially when you are making decisions about your own path.
The Famous Number: IQ as a Job Performance Predictor
The single most-cited statistic in this area comes from a century of studies using general mental ability, often called g. Meta-analyses, especially the influential work of Frank Schmidt and John Hunter, have repeatedly found that g correlates with overall job performance at roughly r ≈ 0.50 to 0.65, depending on the type of job. Translated into plain language, this means general cognitive ability explains about 25% to 40% of the variance in performance ratings across workers.
For a single psychological variable, that is a substantial figure. It is why many large employers still use cognitive ability tests as one screening tool. But it also means that 60% to 75% of variance is explained by something else — personality, knowledge, motivation, training, environment, and chance. Does IQ Predict Income?
It is natural to ask whether IQ translates into higher earnings. The honest answer: only weakly. Studies in different countries have estimated the correlation between IQ and individual income at roughly r ≈ 0.20 to 0.30. That means IQ explains only around 4% to 9% of why some people earn more than others. Education, choice of industry, family background, region, and sheer luck typically explain more.
The pattern is more visible at the extremes. People with very low IQ scores are more likely to struggle economically, often because of correlated factors such as unequal access to education or health, not because of intelligence itself. One of the most useful findings from this research is the threshold effect. Above a certain level of cognitive ability that varies by job, additional IQ points stop predicting gains in performance. If a job demands an IQ of around 115 to be reliably absorbed, then someone at 115 and someone at 145 may perform similarly. The 145 extra ten points help with raw thinking speed, but the bottleneck is no longer raw thinking speed — it is experience, social skill, perseverance, and sometimes luck.

What IQ Tests Tell You About Yourself
The honest summary is this. A high IQ score suggests that you will pick up certain kinds of abstract, novel, or quantitative tasks faster than average. It gives you a head start in some fields. It does not predict that you will be more successful than someone with a slightly lower score, that you will earn more money than someone with a slightly lower score, that you will be more widely respected, or that you will be happier. Once you reach the threshold for a given kind of work, the other factors take over.
